It was first opened to replace the previous airport – Wingfield Aerodrome – in 1954. The airport is the only airport that is located in the metropolitan area of Cape Town to offer scheduled passenger services. There are three terminals – domestic and international, as well as a common central terminal building.

Direct flights arrive and depart from and to South Africa’s two main urban areas, those of Johannesburg and Durban, and flights travel back and forth to a variety of smaller centres in South Africa.
